About the Boat's Yacht Pedigree
The boat is a 68-foot, 3-level Hatteras with about 2,000 square feet of living space. Hatteras is arguably one of the five highest-quality craftsmanship yachts in the world. (The total length is 72 feet, including the rear swim deck and the forward bow extension.)
Hatteras Yachts are still being manufactured. Our Hatteras was made with high-quality components, extensive mahogany interior woodwork, and many other high-end features. The Hatteras yacht manufacturer has been operating continuously for 65 years, and Hatteras replacement parts are available from multiple sources. (When we originally purchased the boat, we researched the highest-quality boats and then intentionally chose and bought a Hatteras.)
(All boat technical specifications and everything included in the sale price are found further down this page.)
Who owns the boat, and why are they selling it?
This boat is owned by a nonprofit organization involved in climate change emergency preparation, adaptation, and resilience building. The organization also teaches about conscious and sustainable lifestyles and livelihoods. To learn more about our nonprofit organization, click the following link to view the factnet.org nonprofit organization website and various mission focuses on our several websites.
The nonprofit originally bought the boat for staff offices and meeting space because San Francisco's rentals were so expensive. For the last 12 years, the Universe Spirit boat has been used as an office for our nonprofit's online organization, for occasional staff and donor meetings, for fundraising cruises, and for office storage space for critical organizational documents. Our nonprofit organization is only selling the boat now because it is moving its headquarters out of the SF Bay Area.
Because our nonprofit organization is involved in climate change education, sustainability and emergency preparation and adaptation for numerous emergencies or crises, the boat also has many unique features that make it ready to survive various emergencies or crises and function sustainably. Owning this unique boat will bring you additional peace of mind if you have also considered intensifying climate change consequences or other increasing societal problems. (The many climate change-related, emergency preparation, and sustainability upgrades are listed below in the emergency preparation and sustainability sections near the bottom of the living accommodations description section.)
The nonprofit organization has invested in many expensive upgrades for this boat because it needed them to reflect our online mission work and to protect its office staff. Upgrades were made as long-term investments because the organization believed it would not ever leave the San Francisco Bay Area and that the boat would be its offices for our online staff and services for at least several more decades.
About the Boat's Current Marina Location
You can move the Universe Spirit boat to any marina you like. If you decide to keep it in its current San Rafael location, you must apply to the marina, pass a credit and background check, and pass an interview with the harbor manager. You can apply and interview with the marina before you purchase the boat to see if you pass all of the marina's standard requirements for keeping a boat in a slip in the current marina.
The Price
This one-of-a-kind SF Bay area boat is $445,000. (Please see the many unique and valuable features and upgrades on the page below.)
The Price Includes
Everything listed below is included at the $445,000 price. It includes our emergency preparation, climate resilience upgrades, and many emergency backup boat parts and supplies. We wanted to "walk our talk" and make this boat a super-safe space for our office staff.
The Price Does Not Include
This does not include the owner's art, personal belongings, kitchen pots and pans, silverware, dishes, glassware, small kitchen counter appliances, office equipment and desk lights, food or beverage inventory, wall art, flower vases or plants, any clothing, the two polished aluminum office chairs, and office file cabinets.
About Universe Spirit Boat Normal Maintenance, Operation, and Parts Issues
1. The sale price includes three hours of post-sale walk-through and training time and three additional hours of freephone consulting after the sale. At closing, you will be walked through regular boat maintenance and operation questions and shown the various manuals for the different systems on the boat.
2. Because the San Francisco Bay Area has thousands of boats (550 in our current marina alone), many professional boat services are available for simple maintenance and cleaning to more complex engine or electronics repair. There are even services that will provide you with all of the routine maintenance. This availability of professional services means it will be easy to own this boat even if you have never maintained a large one before.
3. The boat has extensive owner manuals for almost everything on the boat, filling a long banker's box.
4. The Hatteras yacht builder is still in business; parts are available from multiple sources.
5. We want your new boat experience to be as wonderful as ours, so we will continue to assist you in the future in any way we can. After the initial three hours of phone post-sale phone consulting that comes with the boat sale, if additional consulting is needed, there is a $50 an-hour change, paid 2-hour blocks in advance.

To Schedule a Boat Showing Time
To schedule a showing and walk-through of this property:
1. You must also include a list of times and days you would be available for the boat showing.
3. You must show that you can purchase the boat at the listed sale price. To do that, you will need to send us either a bank loan pre-approval for $445,000 for buying a boat or a bank or similar statement clearly showing you currently have the financial ability to make the purchase.
We hope you understand why we must follow this financial pre-qualification requirement procedure before a physical showing. It is because our nonprofit organization still operates its day-to-day offices and critical mission work online from this boat location. We cannot disrupt our virtual mission services and office staff by doing time-consuming showings with individuals not financially qualified to purchase the boat.
To request the next available showing, please send your financial qualification information and the times you would be available to do a walk-through and view the boat. Please email this information to ([email protected]) and include your phone number.
Once we have received and checked all the above information from you, we will schedule a showing at the first time that works for you and our organization's schedules. We would appreciate your patience in setting up a showing time with us. We will do our best to make that happen as quickly as possible.

Emergency Preparation/Prepper Crisis Features and Upgrades
The nonprofit organization that owns the boat is deeply involved in emergency preparation, adaptation, and building climate change resilience and preparation for other emergencies at all levels. Consequently, it considered and prepared the boat when it purchased it for wildfire smoke, heat, clean water supply independence, and other forms of emergencies or social instability in the San Francisco Bay area. If you have considered intensifying climate change consequences or other problems our society faces, this unique boat will bring you additional peace of mind.
Here are some of its emergency preparedness features:
1. The boat includes a one-year supply of dried emergency survival food stored on the boat for one person, $1,900.
2. It has two Kohler 20 kW diesel generators (overhauled in 9/97). This means you have a backup generator if your first generator stops working. Each generator is as big as a large car engine and can supply power to about two average-sized homes.
3. Three large, high-quality kitchen drinking water filters are under the sink for city water. They super filter water down to 3 micros for pollutants and cost $400 with installation.
4. The HRO 200-plus gallon per day watermaker. It was $11,000 and new in 2010. It creates clear, healthy, super-safe, near-medically pure water from seawater. (It has been used for about 10 hours since its last maintenance and testing in 2018.)
6. Emergncy comunication alternatives: Icom IC-M58 VHF Radio, Icom IC-M710 SSB Radio, ICOM IC-M2a hand-held VHF Radio
7. Battery Backup: All four ship battery banks have eight 32-volt batteries. The four main ships service banks were new in 2018, with $2,600
8. Unlike newer yachts, because the boat was manufactured in 1984 before electronics were a standard part of diesel engine and emergency generator design, if a US enemy launched an EMP pulse attack, you could run your generators and engines to move the boat as necessary to a safer location.
9. Although our diesel fuel tanks can hold 1,800 gallons, we always maintain about 1,200 gallons in the three tanks for emergencies. Marine diesel fuel in the San Francisco Bay area currently averages $5.50 per gallon. This means we have about $6,600 in emergency diesel fuel reserves for engine-powered escapes or running emergency generators on the dock always on hand.
10. Outside allergens, pollutants, or wildfire smoke are managed inside the boat with $1600 worth of the highest-quality new Austin air filtration systems, which manage air quality down to 3 microns (including wildfire smoke).
1. The boat is near-earthquake-safe because it floats, and the water will absorb much of the shaking of any level of earthquake.
11. We have marine Navigation charts, tools, and electronic navigation chips for the West and East Coast, which cost $350.
12. Over the years, we have created an extensive inventory of replacement or backup parts for the boat. (See the inventory list below.)
Additional Boat Emergency Equipment
11 fire extinguishers with holders, $600
11 First alert type smoke and fire detectors. $360
1 Backup emergency high-capacity water hand pump, $200
4 First Alert CO2 detectors, $200
A six-person auto-release covered life raft. Last tested in 2015.
Floating emergency beacon light, $90
Emergency Professional Life preserver packs, Adult, (7 packs) Child, (1pack) $50 per 4 pack, $390
A two-person Kayak with seats, preservers, and paddles for local water use in an emergency, $900
Two large Emergency flashlights, $25
Sustainability Upgrades and Features
Because our nonprofit organization teaches sustainability practices, we have made the boat as sustainable as possible for our office staff. Below are a few of the upgrades we have made and those we plan to complete if we continue to own the boat.
1. We purchased and replaced all the older major appliances (refrigerator, convection microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and electric burner stove) with new super-energy efficient counterparts.
2. All interior upgrades, such as carpeting, shades, valances, etc., were consciously purchased and installed without toxic chemicals.
3. We have replaced all standard lighting with LED lighting wherever possible.
4. We super-sealed off all areas from the lowest level hold, engine room, and generator rooms to prevent unhealthy smells and odors from those areas cost, $900
5. To keep our office staff safe from molds, the boat is continuously dehumidified with regular mold inspection and occasional outside professional mold testing. (About $200 per test session for professional outside testing.)
6. We have built-in separate recycling and trash bins.
7. We have used only biodegradable boat interiors and personal cleaning products.
8. We have stored all non-biodegradable or toxic specialty boat maintenance products outside the boat interior.

Here is a partial list while we are assembling the rest. We estimate that when this list is finished with all prices, we will have at least $10,000+ of backup parts and supplies for this boat. Yacht History
After this Hatteras was made and launched, the boat cruised up and down the US East Coast and Caribbean for several decades. It then cruised south through the Panama Canal, up and down the West Coast of the United States, and even up to Alaska until it found its long-term home in the San Francisco Bay area.
The excellent and spacious Universe Spirit boat started life as a 61-foot Hatteras yacht and was then professionally extended 7 feet. The 68-foot yacht with the 7-foot extension features a fully enclosed aft deck with removable clear glass Isinglass panels for summer use. A large storage hold and a 400-gallon fuel tank were added during the extension to extend the cruising range.
The Universe Spirit yacht contains solid mahogany doors, drawers, walls, and other woodwork only found on the most expensive yachts. Today, solid mahogany doors, drawers, and paneling would cost many times what they cost when the boat was originally built. For example, the solid mahogany doors with stainless steel hardware would be about $2400 each.
Legal
We are not using a traditional boat broker because of the boat's many unique, one-of-a-kind features (as you will see below) and our nonprofit's frugality. We also have organization members with legal backgrounds who will assist us in the final sale.
